5. Yelena Isinbayeva announced a break after winning gold
Russia's Yelena Isinbayeva secured her place in the pantheon of track and field greats by winning a third world pole vault title on home soil at the World Athletics Championships on Aug. 13 and then announced to take a break from the sport to be a mother. 31-year-old Isinbayeva has won two Olympic gold medals and maintained a world record in outdoor women's pole vault.
