Aman who threatened a Citibank branch in Lujiazui with a fake bomb and demanded 1 million yuan (US$161,966) has been arrested on a charge of conveying fake harmful substances yesterday, Pudong New Area prosecutors said.
Prosecutors said the suspect, surnamed Pang, walked into a Citibank branch in the Marine Tower in Lujiazui about 2pm on January 16, wearing a mask and carrying a suitcase. He told bank employees he had large amount of cash and gold bars to be deposited.
After Pang was invited into the VIP room, he took out a car's remote control, claiming it was a remote for a bomb in his suitcase and demanding the bank staff give him 1 million yuan.
A bank employee ran out and called police. Pang was captured at the scene. Police found no explosive, only a cement cylinder covered with transparent plastic.
Pang claimed he was joking. A psychiatric examination showed Pang does not have a mental illness, according to prosecutors.
